We’ve seen many different versions of the tried-and-true smoky eye, but the jewel-toned shadow Kerry Washington added at the Golden Globes gave the classic look a trendy edge. Her makeup artist Carola Gonzalez used a bold purple hue on her inner corners, then balanced the color using tawny neutral shades, all by Lancome. “In order to achieve the depth of her eye shadow, I wet the brush before picking up the color,” Gonzalez said. “Then, I applied it to Kerry’s eyelid and blended. It makes the pigment of the shadow more dense, and it appears darker.” A graphic sweep of liquid eyeliner grounded the bright color, and a few coats of mascara finished the look.
