When it comes to matching your makeup to your dress, the general rule of thumb is to skip on the coordinating hues—but then again, some rules were meant to be broken. At the VH1 Do Something Awards, Sophia Bush was trendy in tangerine, matching her nails and her Oclay Gulsen dress. Although both shades are in the same color family, the darker color on her digits adds contrast and breaks up the look. Matching a bright dress to your manicure is definitely a way to make a statement, so for your next night out, take a tip from Bush and choose a lacquer a shade or two darker than your frock. Plus, since bold shades are all about having fun, experiment with different finishes to change up your tried-and-true top coat. A shiny, liquid-like finish channels a high fashion look, while a matte lacquer adds extra edge.
