True crimson lipsticks can be intimidating, so take a cue from Jennifer Morrison, who wore a sheer warm red to the Tribeca screening of Knife Fight in New York City. Her sienna-hued lip still makes a statement, but doesn’t dominate the look. According to Morrison’s makeup artist Nick Barose, the key to the perfect shade is all in the layering. “Sometimes by layering colors, you can give your usual red lipstick a new modern spin,” he said. “You can mute down a bright red lip by throwing a bronzy orange stain on top to create an understated color that still stands out.” Barose started by blending a cool wine stain onto Morrison’s lips, then applied a warm red gloss over the top. “By mixing a tinted product on top of a bright color, you can create your own unique shades.”
