Piecey Pixie

By switching up the texture of a short crop, it’s easy to create many versatile looks in a matter of minutes. Maggie Gyllenhaal knows this rule very well, and at an event in New York City, the star hit the red carpet in a tousled pixie that still held a refined vibe. To start, her hairstylist Matthew Monzon applied a generous amount of mousse to her damp strands to impart a roughed-up effect. “We wanted to bring out some of the natural wave and bend in Maggie’s natural texture, so I combed through the hair into her own wave pattern,” Monzon said. “Then, I used a diffuser attachment on my hair dryer and started applying heat to the hair.” Once her strands were 80% dry, he twisted random sections using his fingers as he continued to blow-dry with the diffuser. “The trick is to keep the twisting inconsistent to make it feel more haphazard,” he added. After letting the star’s hair cool, Monzon applied a volumizing spray to give the look more definition. “The soft, touchable feel added to the ease of the entire style,” he said. We love it!
