Sun-Kissed Skin

If you got a little extra sun over the long weekend, make sure your makeup works with your new tan—not against it. For the Hamptons screening of The Way Way Back, Toni Colette sported a natural bronzey glow, paired with warm blush and a sheer lip in complementary colors. “The combo of bronze shades on cheeks and lips warm up your tan and enhance it,” said her makeup artist Nick Barose. “The colors illuminate your skin and bring out your summer glow.” Applying bronzer over already-tan skin can give off a muddy effect, so to avoid that, Barose balanced Colette’s complexion with a light sweep of apricot blush. “It warmed up her cheeks without looking obvious,” he added. Keep your undertones in mind when choosing a complementary blush, and use a product that goes in the same direction as your tan. Tans with slight brick or red undertones are flattered by warm peach hues, while olive skin should stick with soft rose shades. A bright lip would have been too fussy for this low-key summer look, so to finish, Barose used a transparent gloss with a slight gold sparkle. “The hint of coppery red plus the subtle bronze shimmer dressed the lips in a casual way so it’s perfect for the summer beach season,” he said.
