Minimalist Smoky Eye

Statement-making LBDs, like the one Kate Mara wore to the New York City premiere of Side Effects, are often complemented by equally bold smoky shadows, but her makeup artist Nick Barose decided to go easy on the eyes and allow her Givenchy number to take center stage. “We decided to go with dark eyes that weren’t overly-smoky with uncomplicated lips and cheeks,” he said. “Kate doesn’t like to look overly made up, so I try to keep her evening makeup light.” Since the star was busy with press events earlier in the day, Barose, who based the look off of her dress and shoes, transitioned her day look with a liner and shadow combo. “We did an easy version of the smoky look using just black eyeliner to define, then I smudged shimmery black shadow around the eyes,” he added. This is an easy way to revamp your daytime makeup for after-work drinks, or if you want to experiment with a smoky eye that isn’t too severe. Barose finished by blotting a sheer red color onto Mara’s lips as a stain for a pop of color.
