Tone-on-Tone Makeup

Matching your makeup to your dress can be a risky move, but thanks to the sheer finishes and neutral color palette, Kate Bosworth’s look at the Sundance premiere of Big Sur didn’t appear overdone. “Kate was wearing a gorgeous Calvin Klein ensemble that pulled various warm neutrals together, and I wanted the makeup to do the same,” said her makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan. “Even though her lips are intense, they don’t compete with the rest of her look since the colors are all in the same family.” To get a similar look, Deenihan, who used a NARS lip pencil on the star, recommends pulling just one color from your outfit to mirror with your makeup. “Choose a shade lighter or darker to add a bit of contrast while keeping the color range the same,” she added. “If that still feels too ‘matchy-matchy,’ try simply matching either the color’s cool or warm undertones.”
