Matte Canvas

One of our constant makeup struggles: Achieving a shine-free, poreless finish minus the feel of heavy foundation. Florence Welch gave us serious skin envy at the LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles. We love how her complexion had a powdery, almost-airbrushed effect, without looking caked on. The trick? Working in layers. Welch’s makeup artist Lisa Aharon prepped the star’s skin with an oil-free lotion, then applied a light coat of tinted moisturizer. The slight hint of color mutes out any uneven tones, but doesn’t completely hide the skin underneath. Make sure to really blend the product along your jaw to avoid any telltale makeup lines. Aharon then went back with a concealer and applied it onto places that needed extra coverage, like underneath the eyes and around the nose. A light dusting of matte powder and a sweep of blush finished the look.
